Ceratonia siliqua (Carob Tree)

The carob tree, also known as wood cherry, is a favorite evergreen tree in the Mediterranean landscape. It can reach a height of 15 meters and a width of 12 meters, providing dense shade in winter and summer. Its crown is spherical, while the trunk is relatively low with several branches. The shape of its leaves is wing-shaped and has a bright green color. The fruit, known as carob, is brown in color and appears in autumn. It thrives in dry and poor soils, at a relatively slow rate. It is a tree suitable for an island, as it is not disturbed by salty water droplets. However, it does not like cold weather, so it is recommended to cover it in winter with anti-freezing cloth. Like the olive tree, it is easily transplanted at an old age. In our country it is used intensively in architectural designs.
